Did You Know?

  • US-54 is the shortest route from the Southwest to the Northeast US? In fact, this diagonal corridor saves up to 180 miles versus alternate Interstate routes (120 miles are save just between Wichita and Tucumcari).
  • US-54 is one of the most heavily traveled 2-lane highway in the US? Up to 40% of the traffic is of a heavy commercial nature.
  • The US-54 daily vehicle count is projected to be 16,000 by 2023 at the KS/OK state line? 4,000 of these will be heavy commercial vehicles (as per KDOT)
  • US-54 connects four major Interstate Highways? These are I-35, I-40, I-70, and I10 through four states.
  • US-54 is an important military route? Fort Bliss, Holloman air Force Base, and White Sands are all on US-54 as well as McConnell and a connection to FT Riley? It also provides access to several military aircraft plants in Wichita.
  • US-54 is a natural NAFTA corridor? Its beginning at the Bridge of Americas at El Paso is the second busiest US border crossing, connecting with Kansas City, Omaha, Des Moines, Minneapolis, Chicago, and points northeast.
  • US-54 has one of the highest accident, injury, and fatality counts of any two-lane highway? It is number one in New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle. Kansas and Oklahoma both have like figures.
  • US-54 from Wichita to El Paso is 741 miles? Of those miles, 510 are two-lane and 236 are four-lane. The cost of building roads and land purchase through right of way in this area is the lowest in the nation due to few rivers, flat terrain, mild weather, and other favorable features.
  • The deep-water port of Topolabampo, Mexico has a connection with US-54 via Chihuahua, Mexico? When the infrastructure is in place it will be of primary importance to the Mid-West and Northeast US.
